Custom Alcohol Ink Artist, Melbourne
Free flowing, a vibrant dance of colours.
Alcohol inks are really something special, no two pieces are ever the same. Watching them is like seeing a dance of colours right before your eyes, and once itβs dried, it unveils the most mesmerising patterns and textures. It's like watching magic unfold right in front of your eyes.
The way these inks blend and transform, creating unexpected hues and designs, is truly a sight to behold. I intentionally reach for these inks because of the authentic textures they create, which, to me, beautifully mimic the intricacies of nature.
Alcohol inks are dye based colours, waterproof, and are very concentrated (so a little bit of colour goes a long way). To dilute them and help them flow around the paper or canvas I use an isopropyl alcohol which is clear. Then I use a heat gun or a brush to move the inks around the paper.
I often play with a mix of warm and cool colours in my pieces. There's something about that balance, that harmony, that just feels right. Sometimes, after the inks dry and I see all those intricate patterns and textures, I leave them as they are, especially if I'm captivated by the natural dance and movement they've created. Amazingly once dry (as long as the artwork hasnβt had its protective seal) you can activate the inks again with the isopropyl alcohol and move them around the paper creating even more textures and details.

Over the years of creating with alcohol inks, and enjoying the beautiful textures and colours they create, suddenly one day I realised that they closely mimic the textures and details in nature.
As I already love sketching flowers and foliage, I thought that the textures achieved using alcohol inks would look great as flowers and leaves, so decided to try cutting out petal shapes to create floral collages. Most artists develop their voice through experimentation, and as I began to experiment with these shapes I discovered an amazing new way to use my beloved alcohol inks to create something both different and beautiful.
