Choosing the right size art for your wall.
Art can be a perfect addition to a space to make it look larger, and a great focal point and statement piece for a room.
As a general rule of thumb, aim to fill two thirds or 75% of the available wall space if you can. This can be achieved with one large artwork or multiple smaller artworks.
Here’s a couple of tips for choosing one large piece of artwork for your space.
A large horizontal or landscape orientation artwork can work well in hallways or centred over furniture (where the furniture items takes up a large part of wall space) e.g. couch, headboard or mantlepiece.
Vertical or portrait orientation artworks work better in spaces that have high ceilings and narrow walls.
Alternatively, you can group smaller collections of artworks together to create the feeling of a large piece, whether they are all the same size or a range of different sizes, this is known as a gallery wall.
Gallery walls are great examples of where multiple smaller pieces of art or photos can combine or compliment each other to create the same impact as a single larger piece.
Gallery walls look great, and you can have a lot of fun with mixing and matching your artworks or photos together.
Another great tip if you are not sure which option works better in your space, is to cut out paper templates of your artwork sizes (including the frame) and attach these templates to the walls using blue painters’ tape so that you can visualise how it will look in your space. Keep experimenting with different walls and size combinations until you find the space and size that you are happy with.
It is a similar technique that one of my friends does before she gets a new tattoo. She will always put a similar size temporary tattoo in the place she is wanting the actual tattoo and keep this there for about 3 months to make sure that she is happy with where it’s going before committing to the permanent ink!
While these are a few inspirational ideas, in the end it is your choice, once you are happy then hang it and enjoy the feeling that these new artworks bring to your home.
