Inspirations that get my creativity flowing

I am often asked where does the inspiration for my art pieces come from?

For me, inspiration comes from many different places, some more obvious, while others are more subtle and probably seem totally random to anyone else. But for me, they all spark my creativity!

Nature

My biggest source of inspiration is nature. There’s something magical about being surrounded by a forest of trees, or the sound of waves crashing onto the beach. Nature really grounds me and flips a creative switch on in my brain.

I’m especially drawn to flowers, their colours and textures, there’s so much beauty in something we can so often walk right past. If you’ve ever looked closely at the intricate patterns of a flower petal or the surface of a leaf, you’ll know what I mean. These perfectly imperfect little wonders feel like tiny masterpieces all on their own.

A lot of my favourite memories are tied to natural places, especially those filled with flowers. I love that you and I could walk through the same forest or sit on the same beach and come away with completely different feelings and memories. This idea fascinates me, and it’s something I try to convey in my art. I want each piece to feel like it could transport you back to a feeling, a memory, just like a certain smell or song can instantly take you back in time.

The way these beautiful flowers hang down, stunning!

Songs and Sounds

Speaking of songs, music plays a huge role in my creative process. I almost always have music on while I'm painting.

If I’m working on a moody, emotional piece, I’ll put on a good 90s ballad from Bon Jovi or Marah Carey. But if I’m creating something bright and joyful, it’s got to be a feel-good pop anthem, thank you Taylor Swift!

I find that music helps me tap into whatever emotion I would like the piece to hold.

The Random Little Things

Then there are the more unexpected sources of inspiration. For example, I can’t help but run my hands along a brick wall and study it’s texture. (Yes, I’m that person awkwardly touching walls on the street!).

Another example is beautiful old buildings with original features, like window shutters or vintage doors. I have a soft spot for a good door!

It’s the colours, textures, or little sensory things like these that can often provide the spark when beginning of a new piece of art.

Bricks, bricks, bricks

A feature piece with exposed brick, amazing!

Inspiration doesn't always strike at convenient times either. I’ve scribbled down ideas on napkins, receipts, and even the back of my hand. When something clicks, I must capture it before it slips away!

So to sum it all up, whether it’s the smell of the ocean, the pattern of a flower petal, the beat of a song, or the rough surface of a brick wall, these are just some of the sources of my inspiration.

My hope is that when you see my work it may also stir up a wonderful memory or emotion and bring you joy!
